World Telecommunication and Information Society Day

Today is the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day which marks the establishment of the International Telecommunication Union in 1865. The theme for 2013 is “ICTs and improving road safety” since based on the UN report 1.3 million people lose their lives annually in traffic related accidents and another 20-50 million are injured mainly in developing countries. Aside the social cost, this implies a high economic cost too. ICTs are anticipated to contribute in improving this situation, so there is high interest from the industry, researchers and policy makers. This is an issue which will be discussed in our next workshop, but you may engage in the discussion now !

GPS, Wi-Fi, GPS and other new technologies offer new opportunities which  have not been yet fully researched. This symposium, which will take place on 17th May 2013 in Manhattan, will explore further these issues. The goal of this symposium is to bring people together to discuss the use of GPS and other new geospatial technologies for transportation planning and policies.  Ideas developed from this symposium will serve to facilitate future collaboration among universities, government agencies, non-for-profit organizations, and private industries.

There is a small travel fund support available and interested parties should register by 30th April 2013.
